Business Central Legacy Search vs Modern Search

Navigating long lists of records can be a challenge, but Business Central makes it easier with its built-in Search functionality. Positioned conveniently at the top of each list page, the search tool lets you quickly filter records and focus on the data you need.

How to Use the Search Tool

Using the search tool is simple and intuitive:
1. Click on the Search icon or press F3 on your keyboard.
2. In the search box, type the text you want to find. You can enter letters, numbers, and symbols.

The search tool scans all fields in your records, matching your input regardless of case (it’s case-insensitive) and locating matches whether they appear at the beginning, middle, or end of a field.

What Can’t Be Searched?
While the search tool is robust, it has some limitations. It won’t match values in::
– Images
– BLOB fields
– FlowFilters
– FlowFields
– Other non-table fields

Legacy Search: Available in versions up to Business Central 2024 Release Wave 1, this older method finds only records with the exact words you type, in the exact order.

Modern Search: Introduced in newer versions, modern search is faster, more flexible, and forgiving about word order.
